Wolverines Pick Up Scrappy Win over Rams

The San Bernardino Valley College women's basketball team rallied in the third quarter and then held on in a tight fourth as the defeated Victor Valley College 49-46 Saturday afternoon in an Inland Empire Athletic Conference game.

After the two teams battle to a 12-12 tie after 10 minutes, the Rams picked up their pressure and defense in the second quarter, holding the Wolverines to 2-of-19 shooting en route to a 25-19 lead at the half.

But the Wolverines turned the tables on the Rams in the third quarter. Julianna Sanchez made four straight free throws to end the quarter, giving SBVC a 33-32 lead after 30 minutes.

SBVC opened the fourth on a 6-0 run, but could not pull away any farther, as the Rams settled down after that. Victor Valley chipped away, briefly taking the lead with just over three minutes to go. But Sanchez completed a three-point play on the ensuing possession, and Destiny Alexander made a 3-pointer after that as SBVC was able to shut the door.

Alexander led the Wolverines with 13 points. Sanchez had 12 points and six steals, while center DeAnne Pinota had 12 points and 14 rebounds in the win.

Destiny Marin of Victor Valley led all scorers with 17 points.
