Defense Clamps Down to Secure Victory

The San Bernardino Valley College women's basketball team opened its season Friday night with a pressing defense that held visiting Porterville College to only 19.4 percent shooting from the field as the Wolverines cruised to a 66-36 victory.

The Wolverines came out firing, outscoring the Pirates 16-2 in the opening quarter, but only held a 10-point lead at the half. But Madison Fierro got a hot hand in the third quarter, going 3-for-3 from 3-point range, as the Wolverines opened up a 48-27 lead after 30 minutes.

SBVC's Destiny Alexander led all scorers, posting 20 points. Fierro ended the game with 16 points.

Meanwhile, the Wolverines were crashing the boards to keep the pressure on the Pirates. The Wolverines outrebounded Porterville 55-36 in the game - 44-24 on the defensive end. Fierro had 13 rebounds, while Alexander added 12 more. And DeAnne Pinota added seven rebounds and four blocks in the victory.

Hailey Johnson led Porterville with 10 points.
