Wolverines Win Defensive Battle Against Grossmont

Patience Hopkins made back-to-back layups to break a tie game and Brianne Cheatum made five of six free throws in the final 37 seconds to help San Bernardino Valley College's women's basketball team to a 48-39 victory over Grossmont on Friday night at SBVC.

The two teams played a tight back-and-forth battle, with each defense making the other team work for every shot it got. The hard work on defense showed as Grossmont only made 31 percent of its shots from the field, while the Wolverines only made 32.7 percent of their shots.

But it was the late heroics from Hopkins and Cheatum that made the difference for San Bernardino Valley. The two fought through early foul trouble in the first half -- both picked up their third foul in the first half -- to lead the Wolverines in scoring. Hopkins led all scorers with 15 points, while Cheatum added 13.

Sabryn Rodas filled in as the major weapon off the bench for the Wolverines, logging more than 22 minutes and scoring eight points, including the only two 3-pointers of the night for San Bernardino Valley. Adrianna Brackins, who had tied the game at 39 with just over two minutes to go, had 10 rebounds to go with five points for the Wolverines.

Brittany Gafare led Grossmont with 11 points.
