Wolverines Clamp Down on Arabs for Victory

Brianne Cheatum had 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists and the San Bernardino Valley College women's basketball team clawed out a 61-59 victory over Imperial Valley on Friday night at SBVC.

The Wolverines (9-8 overall) struggled early, trailing 19-10 after the first quarter. But their defense picked up in the second quarter, limiting the Arabs (1-13) to 1-of-9 shooting and only seven points in the second 10 minutes, scoring 20 to go into the break leading 30-26.

San Bernardino was able to stretch its lead to 10 in the third quarter, but could not put away the Arabs, who fought back to take the lead with 4:15 left in the game. But the Wolverines picked up the defensive pressure again in the final two minutes. Cheatum hit three of four free throws, and assisted on Adrianna Brackens' layup to once again give San Bernardino the lead and the win.

Patience Hopkins added 12 points and Brackens had 10 for the Wolverines. Ashley Gonder led the Arabs with 18, while Keren Hogue added 17.
