SBVC Women’s Basketball secures 8th title in 9 years, knocking off the Panthers, 71-68

SBVC (16-7; 8-1) collected their 8th Foothill Conference Championship in 9 years as they defeated their Conference and regional rival, the Rancho Cucamonga Chaffey Panthers (15-11; 6-3), 71-68.

The very competitive game gave Chaffey the early lead as the game was tied six different times in the first quarter alone, a late layup by the Panthers put the visitors up by two at the end of the quarter, 23-21. Then Chaffey would build up to their largest lead of the game, opening the second quarter with a 6-1 run to go up seven points, 29-22. SBVC would turn the tables quickly after that and take a 17-9 run into halftime, with SBVC taking the lead, 39-38.

With 7:13 left in the third quarter, the game was briefly tied for a ninth and final time, 41-41, and then sophomore starting forward Katrina Anthony (San Bernardino San Gorgonio) went in for a layup giving SBVC the lead for good. Chaffey would get within one point multiple times throughout the rest of the game, but no closer as SBVC took a five point lead at the end of the third quarter and took their largest lead over the Panthers midway through the fourth, 68-58. Chaffey would make the game interesting down the stretch, as SBVC grabbed their largest lead, the Panthers went on a 10-3 run to close it out, but the SBVC defense was too much.

Sophomore starting guard Jaysheana Martinez-Williams (San Bernardino Arroyo Valley) led SBVC with 19 points on 8 of 15 shooting and sophomore starting guard Ashley Carson (Upland H.S.) added 13 points on 5 of 22 shooting, leading the team with six assists and two blocked shots.

Sophomore starting forward Sydney Gray (Las Vegas (NV) Centennial) grabbed her tenth double-double of the season with ten points on 5 of 15 shooting and 14 boards, leading the team with six steals and Anthony would contribute two huge blocks in the victory.
