SBVC Women’s Basketball remains undefeated in Conference, 88-82

SBVC (15-6; 7-0) held on in a game that was a great deal closer than anyone expected on Sophomore Day, remaining undefeated in Foothill Conference play in a win over the Palm Desert College of the Desert Roadrunners (11-15; 1-6), 88-82.

The game opened up with more back and forth than SBVC was expecting, as the Roadrunners took their largest lead of the game, 13-9, with 4:30 left in the first quarter. SBVC eventually fought back to take a 2-point lead before the end of the quarter, 19-17. Desert would once again take a lead, albeit a small one, 35-34 with 48 seconds left in the half, but a 3-pointer from sophomore guard Chase Nacsin (San Bernardino Cajon) kept the Roadrunners away at the half, 39-35.

SBVC would open up the second half on a 16-2 run, as sophomore starting forward Katrina Anthony (San Bernardino San Gorgonio) and sophomore starting forward Sydney Gray (Las Vegas (NV) Centennial) combined to score nine of the opening 10 points. This run gave SBVC a 55-37 lead with 5:15 left in third quarter and ending the quarter with a 69-52 lead.

SBVC's largest lead of the game arrived with 7:45 left in the game, as the home side grabbed a 23-point advantage, 78-55. Shortly thereafter, the Roadrunners descended on SBVC, as they whittled down their lead beginning at the 6:10 mark. Over the next four minutes, Desert would go on a 17-0 run, making 4 layups and three 3-pointers, getting to within four points, 81-77. Breaking the run was freshman guard Ky Fantroy (San Bernardino Indian Springs) and freshman forward ReAndrene Jones (San Bernardino San Gorgonio) who hit back-to-back layups to get SBVC back in control for the remaining 1:15 of the game.

Gray led all scorers with 17 points on 8 of 19 shooting, grabbing 9 boards and leading the team with 6 steals and Anthony grabbed her second double-double in a row as she had 13 points on 6 of 14 shooting and 13 rebounds.

Sophomore starting guard Jaysheana Martinez-Williams (San Bernardino Arroyo Valley) added 11 points, going 3 of 7 from beyond the arc and sophomore starting guard Ashley Carson (Upland H.S.) put up 11 points on 4 of 13 shooting and led the team with 5 assists in the win.

Sophomore forward Xiomara Moya (Riverside Ramona) came off of the bench to put up 12 points, going 8 for 10 from the free throw line and grabbing 9 boards and Jones would collect 13 total boards and lead the team with two blocks on the afternoon.
