SBVC Women’s Basketball gets to Championship Final of LA Valley Tourney

SBVC (6-3) took on an old nemesis in the title game of the LA Valley Tournament, facing the Ventura Pirates.

SBVC opened up tournament play with a victory over the Fullerton Hornets (3-3).

On the winner's side of the bracket, SBVC ran into the host LA Valley Monarchs (2-4). The Monarchs jumped on SBVC early, by the end of the first quarter LA Valley had a 20-15 advantage and the home side would carry that lead into the locker room at halftime, leading SBVC by four points, 32-28. A second half surge was in the making as sophomore guard Jasmine Hickey (Riverside Martin Luther King, Jr.) quickly tied the game at 32-32 early in the quarter, and SBVC opened up the 3rd quarter with a 12-2 run to put the game out of reach for the Monarchs. SBVC would take the semifinal game, 59-54 and would move onto the Championship Final. 

Sophomore guard Ashley Carson (Upland H.S.) grabbed her third double-double of the season, collecting 16 points on 5 of 19 shooting, going a perfect, 6 for 6 from the free throw line and grabbing 15 boards. Carson also had four assists, nine steals and three blocked shots.

Sophomore guard Jaysheana Martinez-Williams (San Bernardino Arroyo Valley) added 15 points on 5 of 21 shooting, going 4 for 6 from the charity stripe in the win.

In the Championship Final, SBVC faced off with the Ventura Pirates (9-3) who had a hard time containing SBVC in the first half, as SBVC took a 24-22 lead at the half. Then the Pirates pulled away in the second half, as they used a 13-3 run to put the game away early in the 4th quarter, taking the Championship, 62-53.

Martinez-Williams was the leading scorer for SBVC with 16 points on 5 of 21 shooting and was 3 of 11 from beyond the arc, adding four steals. Sophomore forward Sydney Gray (Las Vegas (NV) Centennial) contributed her fifth double-double of the season with 15 points on 7 of 13 shooting, grabbing 11 boards and sophomore forward Xiomara Moya (Riverside Ramona) added 10 points on 3 of 5 shooting , going 4 of 6 from the free throw line in the loss.
