SBVC Women’s Basketball struggles at LA Valley Tourney

SBVC (3-8) entered the LAVC Russell Classic with a chance to turn their fortunes around; they faced Fullerton (8-1) in the first round and took a first half lead against second round opponent Grossmont (2-7), but had difficulty closing each game.

SBVC has participated in the Los Angeles Valley College Russell Classic in the L.A. area neighborhood of Valley Glen since the beginning of the tournament and has historically performed well. They opened up the tournament against a very tough Fullerton Hornets squad, only down one at the half, 27-26, but a late push by the Hornets could not be matched and SBVC fell, 64-49.

Sophomore guard Ashley Carson (Upland H.S.) led SBVC with 12 points on 6 of 14 shooting and freshman guard Jasmine Hickey (Riverside Martin Luther King Jr.) added 11 points on 4 of 11 shooting on the afternoon.

In the second round, SBVC faced off with an El Cajon Grossmont Griffins team that was through a similar slow patch in the season and SBVC raced out to a ten point lead at halftime, 31-21, but this game was a story of two halves as the Griffins took the game, 62-55. Carson was the leading scorer for SBVC with 11 points on 3 of 8 shooting and was 5 of 6 from the free throw line.
