SBVC Women’s Basketball has a hard time in 3rd Place finale at CCSF Tourney

SBVC (4-10) traveled north and knocked off the previously undefeated Skyline Trojans (8-1), then fell to one of the toughest teams in the entire tournament, the East L.A. Huskies (11-1) and then had some bad luck against the host City College of San Francisco Rams (8-4).

SBVC opened up the Golden Gate Classic at City College of San Francisco facing off with the Trojans, and although SBVC was down 14 at the break, 34-20, they fought back and nearly doubled up the Trojans in the second half, taking the first round game, 53-51.

Sophomore starting guard Ashley Carson (Upland H.S.) had a solid double-double performance with 20 points, on 7 of 26 shooting and 15 rebounds. Freshman forward Nautica Simmons (San Bernardino Cajon) came off of the bench to add a double-double of her own, with 11 points on 5 of 9 shooting and 14 boards and freshman starting forward Sydney Gray (Las Vegas, NV Centennial) added 15 boards to the total as SBVC dominated on the glass. SBVC grabbed 63 total rebounds compared to the Trojans 39 boards.

On the winners side of the bracket, SBVC was tasked with another tall order in taking out a very tough Huskies squad, with SBVC down 13 at halftime, 30-17, the team responded by playing better in the second half, but they didn't have as many opportunities at the free throw line and fell, 56-39. The Huskies were 21 of 29 (72.4%) from the charity stripe and SBVC only went to the line ten times and shot an impressive 80%. The leading scorer for SBVC was Carson who scored 17 points and was 7 of 8 from the free throw line on the evening.

In the 3rd Place Championship, SBVC faced the host Rams and were down 17 at the break, 38-21 and had a tough time with their offense in the second half, but the SBVC defense did slow down the Rams, although it was not enough, with SBVC falling 63-38. The leading scorer for SBVC was Gray who added nine points on 4 of 8 shooting.
