SBVC Women’s Basketball opens 2015-16 season at the Mt. SAC Tip-Off Tourney

SBVC (2-1) began the 2015-16 season in Walnut at the Mt. San Antonio College Tip-Off Tournament, knocking off the Saddleback Gauchos (1-2) in the 3rd Place Championship.

SBVC started tournament play against West Coast, the 5 p.m. match-up gave SBVC a 42-33 halftime lead and then the team pulled through a 87-74 victory. Sophomore forward Sydney Gray (Las Vegas (NV) Centennial) led the way for SBVC with 21 points on 9 of 17 shooting and 8 boards and sophomore guard Ashley Carson (Upland H.S.) collected her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds, adding 5 steals and going 5 of 6 from the free throw line.

Freshman forward ReAndrene Jones (San Bernardino San Gorgonio) scored 14 points on 7 of 12 shooting, grabbing 9 boards and sophomore forward Katrina Anthony (San Bernardino San Gorgonio) added 10 points on 4 of 9 shooting in the victory.

On the winner's side of the bracket, SBVC faced off with the pre-season #1 in the state, defending state finalists and tournament hosts, the Mt. San Antonio Mounties. Both teams ended the first quarter tied at 17-17, but SBVC would end up down nine at the half, 39-30. Then the shootout began, but slowly the Mounties started to pull away, eventually taking the game, 96-73.

Carson had another stellar all-around game, leading the team in points with 24, on 8 of 17 shooting, but also leading the team in blocks (2), steals (7), and assists (4) then dominating at the charity stripe, going 8 of 13. Jones added a double-double off of the bench, putting up 14 points on 7 of 12 shooting and grabbing 12 boards. Sophomore guard Jaysheana Martinez-Williams (San Bernardino Arroyo Valley) contributed 13 points on 4 of 10 shooting, going 4 of 6 from the free throw line in the loss.

In the 3rd Place Championship game, SBVC faced off with the pre-season #12 team in Southern California, the Mission Viejo Saddleback Gauchos. Carson and Gray both grabbed double-doubles as Carson had 12 points on 5 of 13 shooting and 11 boards, leading the team in assists with 6 and steals with 4. Gray added 10 points on 5 of 15 shooting and grabbed 14 boards, 7 offensive and 7 defensive.

Martinez-Williams led the team with 17 points on 6 of 13 shooting, going an insane 3 for 3 from beyond the arc and sophomore guard Xiomara Moya (Riverside Ramona) collected 9 points on 4 of 12 shooting, grabbing 8 boards in the victory.
