SBVC Women’s Basketball sneaks by the Vikings, 62-53

SBVC (16-11; 10-0) has gone back-to-back years undefeated in the Foothill Conference and it was hard work to accomplish that task, today's game was no different as the contest turned into a grinder, with both teams going to the line 30+ times and shooting the ball over 60 times, but in the end SBVC pushed aside the Barstow Vikings (12-15; 7-3), 62-53.

It was SBVC Sophomore Day and the home side opened the game with 10-0 run and then Barstow went on a 13-3 run to tie the game at 20-20 later in the first half. SBVC would take a two point lead at the half, 26-24. About five minutes in the second half, SBVC started to really pull away, as they had built a double-digit lead that they would hold onto for the next 12 minutes. The final three minutes of the game proved to be closer than they should have been, as both exhausted teams tried to find what they had in themselves to cross the finish line. Barstow got to within six points, 59-53 with 57 seconds left, but that is as close as they would get.

Sophomore starting guard Ashley Carson (Upland H.S.) led all scorers with 18 points on 6 of 13 shooting, including going 2 of 5 from three-point range. Freshman forward Nautica Simmons (San Bernardino Cajon) came off of the bench to add 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting and sophomore starting forward Ameila Villegas (Jurupa Valley H.S.) had the only double-double of the afternoon with 10 points on 3 of 9 shooting and 11 boards. Freshman starting forward Sydney Gray (Las Vegas, NV Centennial) was one point shy of another double-double, collecting 9 points on 3 of 9 shooting and grabbing an impressive 16 total rebounds.
