Wolverines' Bats Silenced in Conference Opener

For four innings Tuesday afternoon, the San Bernardino Valley College softball team was locked in a duel with Barstow College in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

But, in the fifth, the Vikings broke through scoring six times, then adding three more the in the sixth to beat the Wolverines 9-0 in six innings.

SBVC had troubles solving Barstow pitcher Vivien Gutierrez, as they were only able to muster three hits in the game. The Wolverines' Evangelyn Davila led off the third with a single, but she was thrown out trying to steal and Gutierrez stopped any other threat. She had faced the minimum until Davila singled again to lead off the sixth. The Wolverines tried to mount a two-out rally later in the inning, as Aniya Lane reached on an error and Hailea Gutierrez singled to load the bases, but Gutierrez got Viviana Hidalgo to pop out to end the game.

Hailey Krah started for the Wolverines, going three innings without giving up a run with the help of the defense. In the third, center fielder Alyssa Mays ended the Vikings' chances throwing out Natalie Medina trying to score from second on a single.

Jacqueline Gonzalez replaced Krah, and after a 1-2-3 fourth, the wheels came off on the Wolverines. SBVC committed two errors in the inning, with three of the six runs scored being unearned. In the sixth, another three runs crossed the plate, one of those unearned.
