Softball Team Says Goodbye to Sophomores, Sola in Slugfest

The San Bernardino Valley College softball team ended its 2019 season with a bang, pounding out 12 hits and scoring 11 runs. Only it wasn't enough.

Grossmont had 20 hits of its own, pushing 18 runs across in the process as the Griffins beat the Wolverines 18-11 in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference game at Chavez Park in Colton.

The Griffins jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings, and after holding Grossmont scoreless in the third, the Wolverines started scoring as well. Back-to-back doubles from Guadalupe Villa (scoring Elisha Smith Mayfield) and Sicily Stanley pulled SBVC back within four runs. But from there, the two teams scored in every inning, for a thrilling end to the regular season.

Villa ended the day going 4-for-5 with four runs scored and three runs batted in. Stanley, in her final game as a Wolverine, was 2-for-3 with a run and RBI, while Mayfield was 3-for-5 with three runs scored.

Before all the fireworks started, the Wolverines said goodbye to their sophomores. The team honored Stanley, pitcher Gabrielle Ursuy and third baseman Angelica Macias. Urusy pitched the entire game for SBVC, adding to her all-time totals that put her in the top 10 in innings pitched. She will also rank in the top 10 in hits and runs batted in.

The team also honored retiring head trainer Michael Sola, presenting him with a signed softball and letters of thanks as he threw out the first pitch before the game, his final softball game at SBVC.
