The San Bernardino Valley College softball team found itself in a familiar position after half an inning Wednesday afternoon at Chavez Park in Colton - trailing.
But unlike other games this season, the Wolverines bats came alive and pounded out 14 hits as SBVC knocked off Mt. San Jacinto 16-8 for the team's first home victory of the season.
Gabrielle Ursuy came in to pitch in the first inning after starter Emily Sanchez Gutierrez struggled with her control through the first four batters. The Eagles took advantage, scoring five times in the opening frame. But the Wolverines answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the inning. With one out, Elisha Smith Mayfield walked and stole second. She moved to third on a groundout, and scored on a single by Gutierrez, making it 5-1 after an inning.
But it was the second inning that changed the game for the Wolverines. With one out, Kennedy McCarthy walked and stole second. Alexandra Romo reached on an error, allowing McCarthy to move to third. Aniya Riddlespringer followed with an infield single to load the bases. Ursuy flew out to center, scoring McCarthy from third. Mayfield doubled home Romo, and Angelica Macias singled home Riddlespringer and Mayfield. Gutierrez then doubled to score Macias and tie the game after two.
McCarthy broke the tie in the third. She led off with a single and again stole second. She came home on a single to right by Romo, and an error that allowed her to score. Four batters later Macias singled home Romo to make it 8-6 after three.
The SBVC offense spread the hitting around Wednesday. Gutierrez was 4-for-4, with a double, scoring twice and adding two RBI. Macias was 3-for-4 with four RBI, while Mayfield was 2-for-3 with two doubles. Destinee Caldwell added a triple and McCarthy scored three times.
