SBVC Softball falls to the Griffins late, 12-5

SBVC (10-21) grabbed a non-Conference match-up against their future Conference opponents as they built and early lead, but could not hold it, falling to the El Cajon Grossmont Griffins (21-9-1), 12-5.

With SBVC on a 9 day break in-between Foothill Conference games, they decided to schedule an opponent they will see regularly when they move into the Pacific Coast Conference, Grossmont. As luck would have it, the game originally scheduled for 1:00 pm to accommodate for travel for the visitors was delayed for nearly 2 hours, but once the game started, it was a good one.

On the very first pitch of the game, sophomore short stop and leadoff batter Savanah Guzman (Redlands H.S.) clobbered a solo home run to left, giving SBVC an early 1-0 lead. The Griffins would tie the game in the top of the second inning and SBVC would regain the lead in the bottom of the second.

Freshman center fielder Erin Alvizo (Fontana Henry J. Kaiser) would leadoff the second with a single to right field and move to third on a bunt single by freshman right fielder Selena Roldan (San Bernardino Cajon) and a throwing error by the Griffins catcher. Freshman left fielder Desiree Gonzalez (Redlands H.S.) hit a one out bunt single and Alvizo was called out at home on a high tag by the Grossmont catcher, giving Alvizo a bloody lip. With two out and two on, freshman second baseman Desiree Donley (San Bernardino Options 4 Youth) punched a single to center, which scored Roldan and Gonzalez. At which time the Grossmont coach had seen enough and they brought in their ace to get Guzman out on three pitches for the final out in the inning.

Grossmont would tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the third and SBVC would get the lead back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame, taking a 4-3 lead. Freshman right handed starting pitcher Terilyn Baude (10-16) (San Bernardino Cajon) hit a two out single to right and after an Alvizo walk, scored on a double to center by Roldan.

The Griffins would tie the game again in the top of the fourth, then bust the game open in the top of the sixth, scoring six runs and brining all 9 players to the plate in the inning, making the score 10-4.

SBVC was not going to back down as Gonzalez led off the inning with a double to center and Donley sacrificed her over to second, where Guzman crushed a double to left to score Gonzalez. Unfortunately, that would be it for the home side as the Griffins would score two more runs in the top of the seventh.
