SBVC Softball is stung by the Hornets, 7-4

SBVC (13-8) took an early lead, but a missed opportunity at a double play in the fourth led to a two out four-run explosion by the Fullerton Hornets (13-8) and the home side eventually fell, 7-4.

SBVC opened up the scoring in the bottom of the second when sophomore first baseman Alicia Morris (San Bernardino Cajon) clobbered a leadoff home run, her second of the year, to give SBVC a 1-0 lead over their Orange Empire Conference opponents.

The Hornets would take the lead in the top half of the fourth, when back-to-back singles put runners at the corners with no outs and a ball was bashed to the second baseman that got the out, but failed to toss to first for the double play. After an error by the short stop, two runs scored and a single to center scored two more runs, by the time the dust settled, the Hornets had taken a 4-1 lead.

SBVC battled back in the bottom of the fifth, getting to within one run, all on a two out rally. With two outs, sophomore short stop Lauren Melchor (Redlands East Valley) singled to right and sophomore third baseman Tina Acosta (Colton H.S.) followed that up with a single to center, both advancing a base on the throw. Sophomore catcher Laurie Haro (San Bernardino Aquinas) singled in Melchor and Acosta came around to score on an error by the Fullerton center fielder, making the score 4-3.

Unfortunately, the Hornets would return the favor in the top of the sixth, with two runs of their own and another run in the top of the seventh to put the game close to out of reach.

There is no telling this SBVC to quit; they fought back in the bottom of the seventh, after a ground out to short, an error by the Hornets short stop, put a runner on first with one out. The top of the lineup came around and Melchor singled to left, the next batter struck out and Haro punched another two out RBI single to score freshman center fielder Evangelina Mosqueda (Riverside Poly). With runners at first and second, two outs and down by three runs SBVC had a chance, but fell short.

Melchor went 3 for 4 with a run scored and Haro went 2 for 4 with two RBI's on the afternoon.
