Distance Runners Strong in Early Season Tune Up

The San Bernardino Valley College track teams took their first competitive strides of the season last weekend at the Cerritos Invitational.

The team's distance runners got the most action, competing in the 800, 1500 and 3000 meter races. Carlos de la Torre and Humberto Guzman finished two-three in the 1500 meters, as the race started slow, making the runners adapt to the pace. Guzman also finished fourth in the 800 meters.

Eduardo Toris, who also competed at 1500 meters, finished seventh in the 3000 meters, posting a time of 8:59.00.

On the women's side, Alyssa Benavides finished third in the 3000 meters, while Lilly Armendariz took 13 seconds off her personal best at the distance.

Also cometiting at the event were Joshua Johnson, who finished fourth in his 400 meter heat. Freshman Daniel Galeano competed in both the shot put and discus throws.

On the women's side, Dejanea Williams finished seventh in the long jump with a top jump of 4.5 meters. Domonique Tanori finished ninth in the shot put with a top toss of 9.18 meters, while teammate Savannah Carter finished eighth in the discus with a top throw of 30.31 meters. Carter finished seventh in the hammer throw at 28.25 meters.
