The San Bernardino Valley College track team was able to run fast enough to stay ahead of the rain and put up some outstanding performances at the Pasadena City College Invitational on Saturday.
SBVC's distance crew posted a strong performance, led by freshmen Kevin Quinteros and Elvis Rojas King. Running in their first collegiate 1500 meters, Quinteros pulled away in the final lap to earn the win with a time of 4:07.92, with Rojas King just behind in third at 4:09.16. The duo competed in the 800 about 40 minutes later, and this time it was Rojas King crossing the line first at 1:57.77 and Quinteros in third at 1:58.76. The times in both events put them in the top 15 in the state early on in the season.
Freshman Adam Lunt led the Wolverines' squad in the 5,000 meters, running away from the field to finish in 15:54.15, seven seconds ahead of the second place finisher and 15 seconds ahead of teammate Luis Garcia, who crossed at 16:09.44. Jeffory Phelps finished fifth in the event at 16:46.39.
On the women's side, Kimberly Pena continued her strong 2019-20 campaign with a first place finish in the 1500 meters, crossing the line at 5:18.80. Teammate Jayda Martinez finished fifth at 5:42.22. Thirty-five minutes after finishing the 1500, Pena posted a personal best in the 800 at 2:32.54, good for second place.
The Wolverines also got strong performances from Darius Gibbs, who finished first in the men's 110 hurdles with a time of 15.79, and Xavier Gonzalez, who finished fourth in the 400 hurdles at 1:02.05. Kaila Eaton finished third in the women's 100 hurdles at 17:86.
