Wolverines Take Next Step in Run to State

The San Bernardino Valley College track and field teams will send 14 athletes to the Southern California Regional Preliminaries in two weeks at Riverside City College, thanks to their showings at the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference Finals, held last Saturday at Cuyamaca College.

Sophomore Carlos de la Torre will participate in three events at regionals, as he finished fifth in the 1,500 meter run, third in the 800 meters and was part of the men's 4x400 meter relay team that finished second.

Humberto Guzman, Isaiah Gonzalez and Fernando Duenas each qualified in two events. Gonzalez qualified individually in the 1,500 meters and Duenas individually in the 800 meters, and each will join de la Torre and David Hernandez as part of the men's 4x400 meter relay team at regionals. Guzman qualified as an individual in two events, the 1,500 meters and 5K race.

The Wolverines will also send two athletes in the 10K race, after that race was completed last Wednesday during the conference prelims held at SBVC. Michael Ramirez, SBVC's top finisher at the state finals in cross country, finished second with a time of 33 minutes, 7.07 seconds, as he and San Diego Mesa's Stefon Rasmuson pulled away from the field in the final two laps. Mauricio Ramos finished fifth, posting a qualifying time of 34:24.95. Luis Garcia rounds out the men's contingent, qualifying in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.

Not to be left out, the Wolverines advanced two hurdlers and a long jumper. David Hernandez qualified in the 400 intermediate hurdles, while Aryries advanced in the 110 high hurdles. Kenyon Daisley advance in the long jump.

Darilyn Hernandez was the only Wolverine athlete to win her race at conference, as she won the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a State B qualifying time of 12:24.44. Lilly Armendariz is the only other female runner to advance, as she will compete in the women's 5K.

Another female advancing is thrower Domonique Tanori, who advanced with finishes in the shot put and discus.
