Four San Bernardino Valley College athletes participated at the CCCAA State Championships at Bakersfield College May 18-19, and all four brought home top 10 finishes at the statewide event.

Sophomore Derrick Affor (Beaumont) finished sixth in the decathlon, the grueling two-day, 10-event challenge for all-around athletes. Affor finished the event with 5,826 points, just 22 points off the school record he set earlier this year. Affor won the long jump part of the competition with a jump of 22 feet, 4¼ inches, and finished second in the 110 meter hurdles and long jump.

After posting her season's best jump at the Southern California Finals to get into the championships, sophomore Dejanae Williams finished 10th at state with a best attempt of 16 feet, 10 inches.

Freshman Michael Ramirez, who had been banged up in the days leading up to state, put up a personal best in the 10,000 meters, finishing eighth. He finished with a time of 32 minutes, 12.15 seconds, which was 11 seconds faster than his personal best in the event.

In the men's 5,000 meters, cross country All-American Carlos de la Torre ran to a sixth place finish on the track. He crossed the line in 15:50.66.
