SBVC Men’s Track dominates in 1500 meters at Vaquero Classic

SBVC Men's Track & Field hit the road again for their eighth event of the 2016 season as they sent 18 student athletes to the Vaquero Classic at Glendale College. SBVC participated in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, 800 meter run, 1500 meter run, 5000 meter run, 3000 meter steeplechase, long jump, triple jump, shot put and discus throw.

"Wet, wet day at Glendale. Valley distance runners continue to improve as the championships season is around the corner" comented distance coach Jim Ratigan.

In the torrential rain in Glendale, SBVC once again dominated in the 1500 meter run, with freshman distance runner Michael Teran (Fontana Jurupa Hills) leading the way, finishing in 3rd place with a time of 4:01.24 and freshman distance runner Luis Ortega (Fontana Jurupa Hills) grabbing a 5th place finish with a time of 4:01.86. Coach Ratigan stated, "both (Teran and Ortega showed their) seasonal bests in a tactical/slow early pace race." Sophomore distance runner Derek Barnett (Redlands East Valley) held on to collect a 9th place finish with a time of 4:04.75.

Freshman jumper Johnny Moss (Romoland Heritage) helped SBVC to an 5th place finish in the triple jump with a distance of 11.81 meters and sophomore jumper Lawrence Carter (San Bernardino Cajon) collected a 6th place finish with a distance of 11.55 meters, which surpassed his previous best by 0.45 meters. Freshman jumper Tre'veon Dozier (San Bernardino Pacific) reached a distance of 11.26, which was good enough for 7th place. Moss and Dozier also participated in the long jump, with Moss reaching a 9th place finish with a distance of 6.20 meters and Dozier hitting 6.15 meters, good enough for 11th place.

Freshman distance runner Josh Lopez (Jurupa Valley Rubidoux) crossed the finish after the grueling 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:15.84, which was good enough for 7th place and 2.50 seconds ahead of his nearest opponent.

Both freshman relay runner Kelvon Tisby (Rialto W.A. Carter) and freshman sprints runner Jonte West (Beaumont H.S.) participated in the 100 meter and 200 meter dash. Tisby finished 19th in the 100 meter dash, with a time of 11.74 and West finished 25th with a time of 11.98. In the 200 meters, Tisby finished 20th with a time of 23.67 and West grabbed a time of 24.50, good enough for 36th place.

Freshman distance runner Antonio Sanchez (Jurupa Valley Rubidoux) led the way for SBVC in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:01.78, good enough for 13th place and freshman distance runner Angel Parga (Bloomington H.S.) finished in 22nd place with a time of 2:03.93. According to Coach Ratigan, all of SBVC's participants in the 800 meter run, ran their "season's best" times, including "Fernando Bolanos (2:05.25), Eubrey Camacho (2:05.31) and Abraham Covarrubias (2:13.97)."

Freshman thrower Santiago Castillo (San Bernardino Pacific) represented SBVC in the shot put and discus throw as he reached 11.10 meters in the shot put for a 14th place finish and collected a 19th place finish in the discus throw, with a distance of 31.30 meters.

"Christian Sharp took 10th in the 5K at 16:19.75, also a seasonal best," Coach Ratigan said.
