SBVC Men’s Track grabs 2nd in 4000 Meter Distance Medley at SBCC Easter Relays

SBVC Men's Track & Field hit the road again for their sixth event of the 2016 season as they sent 11 student athletes to the Santa Barbara Easter Relays at Santa Barbara City College. SBVC participated in the 4x800 meter relay, 4,000 meter distance medley, 1500 meter relay and 3000 meter steeplechase.

SBVC finished 2nd in the 4,000 meter distance medley with a time of 10:12.89, knocking off 5.25 seconds off of their previous best mark. Unlike most track relays, each member of the team runs a different distance. Running the 1200 meter leg was sophomore distance runner Derek Barnett (Redlands East Valley), running the 400 meter leg was freshman relay runner Tony Salter (Grand Terrace H.S.), running the 800 meter leg was freshman distance runner Luis Ortega (Fontana Jurupa Hills) and grabbing the anchor 1600 meter leg was freshman distance runner Michael Teran (Fontana Jurupa Hills). According to distance coach Jim Ratigan, the "Team of Derek Barnett, Tony Salter, Luis Ortega and Michael Teran finished just behind College of the Canyons at 10:12.22. Teran anchored in 4:09 for the 1600 leg." One other SBVC team grabbed an 8th place finish.

SBVC finished in 4th place in the 4x800 meter relay as the team put up a time of 8:13.40, Teran opened things up then handed off to freshman distance runner Antonio Sanchez (Jurupa Valley Rubidoux), who gave it to Ortega and then Barnett was handed the anchor leg.

Freshman distance runner Josh Lopez (Jurupa Valley Rubidoux) crossed the finish line after the grueling 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 10:11.97, knocking off 28.59 seconds off of their previous best mark, which was good enough for 3rd place.

Freshman distance runner David Hughes (Redlands East Valley) and freshman distance runner Fernando Bolanos (Rialto W.A. Carter) both took on the 1500 meter run, with Hughes collecting an 8th place finish with a time of 4:10.06 and Bolanos finishing with a time of 4:12.08, good enough for 9th place.
