SBVC Men’s Track & Field breaks 5k record at Occidental event

SBVC Men's Track & Field hit the road again for their fourth event of the 2016 season as they sent 12 student athletes to Occidental College in Eagle Rock for the Occidental Distance Carnival Spring Break Classic. SBVC participated in the 5000 meter run, 1500 meter run, and the 800 meter run.

Freshman distance runner Michael Teran (Fontana Jurupa Hills) led the way for SBVC in the 5000 meter run finishing 11th with a time of 14:23.90, which according to distance coach Jim Ratigan was enough to "assert himself as the fastest Wolverine ever over the 12.5 lap 5 kilometer distance (3.1 miles)." In addition, "Teran's time betters that of Gabriel Hernandez (14:35.2) from 1999."

In the same 5000 meter event, sophomore distance runner Derek Barnett (Redlands East Valley) collected a 47th place finish with a time of 14:59.94 and freshman distance runner Luis Ortega (Fontana Jurupa Hills) finished with a time of 15:03.96, good enough for 51st place.

Top finisher for SBVC in the 1500 meter run was freshman distance runner Omar Arroyo (Riverside Norte Vista) who finished with a time of 4:41.52, dropping 2.09 seconds off of his previous best, which was good enough for 124th place. Top finisher for SBVC in the 800 meter run was freshman distance runner Angel Parga (Bloomington H.S.) who finished with a time of 2:07.18, good enough for 72nd place.
