Chaffey Trips Up SBVC in IEAC Opener

After playing a schedule loaded with teams in the state top 20 rankings, the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team returned home Friday to open Inland Empire Athletic Conference play.

But all that experience was unable to help the Wolverines, as they fell to Chaffey 2-0 inside SBVC Stadium.

Chaffey opened the scoring in the 10th minute, on the game's first shot. Daniel Almendariz received a pass back from Melvin Rodriguez Mir about 30 yards out. Alemendariz fired a low shot through traffic. SBVC goalkeeper Arturo Magana, partially screened on the play, reacted late, and the ball ended up in the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Magana made a pair of point blank saves to keep the score close, but he couldn't stop Azrael Lozado's strike from the penalty spot in the 67th minute, giving Chaffey an insurance goal it would not need.

SBVC outshot the Panthers 15-8 in the game, but few of the Wolverines' chances tested Chaffey goalkeeper Jose Estrada, who was only forced to make three saves.
