SBVC, Santa Ana Battle to Draw

In a game with two teams playing a physical style, sometimes all it takes is the smallest opening for a team to score a goal.

That's how the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team was able score its only goal Friday afternoon, as the Wolverines battled to a 1-1 draw against Santa Ana College.

In the 23rd minute, the Dons played a pass backward toward its own goal, and it bounced free. After a scramble, the ball popped loose to SBVC's Salvador Guerrero, who found himself with a clear view of goal. He shot the ball past Santa Ana goalkeeper Jorge Cortes to even the score.

Cortes played a role in his team's goal. After making a stop on his end, he quickly punted the ball down the field. The ball bounded past the SBVC defense, with Joshua Lezama running the ball down and chipping it over SBVC goalkeeper Arturo Magana for the 1-0 lead in the 11th minute.

The second half saw both teams get chances, but Cortes and SBVC's Brian Orozco turned away each challenge.

SBVC heads off next weekend for a road trip north, as they will take on Fresno on Thursday and Clovis on Saturday.
