Santa Ana Bends One Past SBVC for Win

Early in the season, the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team has been putting itself to the test, taking on some of the top teams in the state. And so far, it has come without a win, or even a goal.

That streak continued in the team's home opener Tuesday, as the Wolverines lost to Santa Ana, 1-0.

The Wolverines' defense and goaltender Christopher Gomez were up to the task for most of the game's 90 minutes. Gomez notched nine saves on the 10 shots he faced, including several diving efforts to keep his team in the game. But there was one shot he couldn't keep out of his net.

That came in the 32nd minute. After a SBVC foul was whilstled, Santa Ana's Jesus Nunez stepped up to the ball from about 30 yards out and lifted the ball over the Wolverines' four-man wall and into the upper right corner of the net for the game's only marker. Nunez was credited with six of the Dons' shots on goal Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Santa Ana's defense clamped down on SBVC chances in the second half. The Wolverines had five shots in the first half, but were limited to only three in the last 45 minutes.

The Wolverines' non-conference schedule won't get easier, as they will travel to Long Beach on Friday.
