Pair of Mistakes Cost Wolverines in Loss to Long Beach

Despite holding Long Beach City College to only two shots on goal, the San Bernardino Valley College men’s soccer team left their home field looking for answers after falling to the Vikings 2-1 Tuesday afternoon.

The Wolverines (2-2) dominated the flow of play for long stretches, but let two loose balls fall in the middle of the field, giving Long Beach the openings they were looking for in the game.

The Vikings (4-0) opened the scoring in the 37th minute when Bryan Majano settled a cross and pushed it to Jose Ortiz. Ortiz shot through the crowd and put the ball past goalkeeper Abraham Garces for the 1-0 lead. The Wolverines outshot Long Beach 8-5 in the half, and had three corners to none for the Vikings.

San Bernardino tied the game in the 53rd minute, as Lance Diaz II found a way to get free inside the penalty area and get his head on a long pass from Devin Castro, making the score 1-1.

But with San Bernardino pressing to break the tie, the Vikings countered. A loose ball in the middle of the field fell at the top of the arc to Christopher Ribet, who made no mistake with his shot.

The Wolverines close out non-conference play Friday at Santa Barbara, and will open conference play on the road next Tuesday at San Diego City College. They return home at 3:15 p.m. next Friday to host Cuyamaca.
