Wolverines Win Physical Battle With Southwestern

Andrew Quiroz had two goals and an assist and Tony Vallejo had a goal and two assists as the San Bernardino Valley College men’s soccer team jumped back into first place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference with a 4-2 victory over Southwestern College on Friday at SBVC.

The Wolverines (9-7-1 overall, 7-2-1 in PCAC play) led 2-0 at the half as Vallejo put home a Quiroz cross in the 13th minute, then another hustle play from Quiroz on the left side led to his first goal of the game.

After the Jaguars (7-5-5, 6-3-2) cut the lead in half on a goal from Josue Lopez, Quiroz scored the game in the 65th minute, putting home a pass from Vallejo. The Jaguars cut the score again, as Eddy Lopez scored with about 20 minutes remaining.

But Vallejo got a ball served to him on the right side, and he pushed it across goal, where Miguel Chavez poked it into the net in the 85th minute to seal the win for the Wolverines.

Friday’s game was an intense, rough affair, with 34 fouls called, six yellow cards issued and one player ejected. San Bernardino Valley outshot the Jaguars 20-14 for the game.

Carlos Murillo made four saves to earn the win, with Christopher Gomez making three more saves in relief, after Murillo was forced from the game after a collision in front of his net.
