Late Goal Spoils Wolverines Celebration

The San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team conceded the game-tying goal in the second minute of stoppage time, as San Diego Mesa rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 2-2 tie Tuesday at SBVC.

The tie kept the Wolverines from clinching the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference championship for the second year in a row. San Bernardino Valley will have another chance to win the championship Friday when it hosts MiraCosta in the final regular season game.

The Wolverines (12-7-2 overall, 10-3-2 in PCAC play) scored twice in the opening 12 minutes. Tony Vallejo was at the end of an Andrew Quiroz pass in the fifth minute to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. Then Fred Zaragoza gathered in Noe Granillo's pass and shot it past Nelson Duque for the 2-0 advantage.

But the Olympians (6-5-9, 4-5-6) kept pounding away. Chris Churness pounded a shot past Carlos Murillo from about 25 yards in the 25th minute to cut the lead in half.

Although the Wolverines controlled much of the possession – and outshot the Olympians 32-11 in the game – San Diego Mesa was still getting chance, and one finally paid off as darkness started to envelope the field.

Down a man after a red card ejection, Mesa got the equalizer in the second minute of stoppage, as the ball was headed by Carlos Granados to Nathan Silva, who volleyed a shot just under the crossbar to tie the game.
