SBVC Men’s Soccer rolls past the Roadrunners, 2-0

SBVC (5-4-6; 2-1) changed up their offensive arrangement and put the #1 team in the state in a bind early, but in the second half the home side struck twice to be the first team this season to knock down the Whittier Rio Hondo Roadrunners (10-1-3; 0-1-1), 2-0.

SBVC started running a five midfielder set that just confounded the Roadrunners offensive response, shutting down the Rio Hondo forwards for most of the game. Although freshman starting goalkeeper Alexis Primera (Colton H.S.) had to work hard to keep the clean sheet as he made seven saves while the Roadrunners peppered him with 18 shots. The corner kicks were even at 7 corners a-piece.

The SBVC offense was relentless as they took 24 shots, 16 in the first half alone. The Rio Hondo keeper made three huge saves in the 11th minute as three different SBVC players took point-blank shots and the Roadrunners keeper blocked each attempt. Both teams would go into halftime in a 0-0 draw.

In the second half, SBVC would strike first in the 57th minute at freshman midfielder Danny Meza (Fontana Jurupa Hills) lobbed a shot in from a free kick and sophomore midfielder Bryan Oropeza (Corona H.S.) headed the ball in between the keeper and the post to give SBVC a huge 1-0 lead.

SBVC scored an insurance goal exactly 20 minutes later, in the 77th minute, as freshman midfielder Aldo Iniguez (San Bernardino San Gorgonio) snuck a shot past the keeper off of a deflection and gave SBVC a 2-0 lead.
