When San Bernardino Valley and Cypress Colleges' men's basketball teams left the court at halftime Wednesday, both coaches knew that they would need to make adjustments - and hope that their teams could implement them - if they wanted to advance into the second round of the CCCAA playoffs.
And while it wasn't always pretty, the Wolverines were able to make their shots in the second half, and pulled away from the Chargers in the final few minutes in a 60-43 victory. SBVC will play Los Angeles Valley College in the second round Saturday.
Neither team set the world on fire in the first half, as the Chargers went into the break leading 23-21. Both teams struggled from the field, with Cypress only making 26.9 percent of its shots, while SBVC only hit 22.6 percent from the floor.
But SBVC came out with a new purpose in the second half, finally taking the lead on their third possession of the half, then never looking back.
Eric Hancik led the way for the SBVC offense, scoring 19 points - including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. Brandon Betson was the only other player in the game in double figures, as he added 13. Cameron Butler pulled down 10 rebounds in the win.
SBVC ended the game hitting on 35.2 percent of its shots, but was 33.3 percent from beyond the arc. Cypress struggled from the field, finishing the game shooting 28 percent, and were only 4-of-22 shots from 3-point range.
Kaden Headington led the Chargers with 9 points, while Kamron Barnes had 12 rebounds.
