Clutch Play at End Lifts Wolverines to Next Round

Kevin McNeal made three free throws with two seconds remaining to force overtime, and the fourth-ranked San Bernardino Valley College men's basketball team used a 9-0 run in the extra period to beat Antelope Valley College 87-81 in the second round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs Saturday night at SBVC.

The Wolverines (27-4) trailed by as many as six in the second half, and were down three with five seconds left after Surako Follings Jr. made two free throws. The Wolverines rushed the ball down the court and McNeal threw up a desperation 3-pointer and drew the foul on D'Mauria Jones. McNeal's first free throw bounced around the rim before falling through. His last two went through to force overtime.

San Bernardino Valley started strong, jumping out to a 15-point lead early in the first half, but Antelope Valley (17-15) chipped away, closing the gap to three points at the half. The Wolverines came out cold in the second half, making only 29.2 percent of their shots, as the Marauders' defense swarmed SBVC.

Antelope Valley even led briefly in the overtime period, but Kendall Lauderdale hit a jumper, followed by a pair of buckets from Ty Glover – the second one a 3-pointer with only three seconds left on the shot clock – that seemed to break the backs of the Marauders.

Glover ended the game leading all scorers with 27 points, followed closely behind by McNeal, who had 26. Jones led the way for Antelope Valley with 24 points, while teammate Julian Payton had 23.

The Wolverines advance to the third round to take on Allan Hancock College at 7 p.m. next Saturday night at SBVC.
