SBVC Men’s Basketball once again uses late run to secure win over Roadrunners, 88-68

SBVC (23-3; 4-1) had all 5 starters in double figures as they rebounded quite nicely at home with a sluggish early effort, but then used a 23-8 run over a 10 minute span to bury the Whittier Rio Hondo Roadrunners (8-16; 1-4), 68-88.

SBVC opened up the game on a 12-2 run, eventually building a 16 point lead halfway through the first half, 28-12. But SBVC found themselves on the wrong side of a 3-point battle, with the Roadrunners hitting three consecutive shots from 3-point range with only one from SBVC. The result of that Battle Beyond the Arc put Rio Hondo within 2 points with a minute left in the half, SBVC would get a jumper from freshman forward Brandon Jolley (Pasadena H.S.) just before the half, giving SBVC a 4 point lead and making the score 40-36 at the break.

Rio Hondo would open up the second half on a 6-0 run and take a rare 2 point lead, 42-40, at which point SBVC was done toying around. SBVC would go on a 17-7 run to put some distance between themselves and the Roadrunners, taking a 67-52 lead with 5:45 left in the game, eventually taking the game by 20 points.

Jolley would lead both teams with 22 points and 13 boards for his fourth double-double of the season, going 4 for 4 from the free throw line and freshman guard Robert Lewis (Compton H.S.) would add a double-double of his own with 21 points, on 8 of 11 from the field, going 4 of 6 from 3-point range, and 10 assists.

Sophomore guard Zack Rollins (Westchester (NY) Pelham Memorial) added 11 points on 4 of 8 shooting and four steals and sophomore forward JaCardo Hawkins (Gonzales (LA) East Ascension) contributed 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting and four blocks. Freshman guard Ja Morgan (Las Vegas (NV) Palo Verde) put up 10 points on 3 of 11 shooting in the victory.
