SBVC Men’s Basketball cruises through Imperial Valley Tournament

SBVC (19-2) concluded the last non-Conference tournament of the season, rolling through the Imperial Valley Tournament and taking the Championship game.

In the opening round SBVC ran into the Compton Tartars (4-8) grabbing a 14 point lead going into the half, 34-20, SBVC would extend that lead and win the game by 25, 78-53.

Sophomore guard Zack Rollins (Westchester (NY) Pelham Memorial) led all scorers with 18 points on 8 of 14 shooting and sophomore forward JaCardo Hawkins (Gonzales (LA) East Ascension) added 17 points on 7 of 8 shooting from the field.

Freshman forward Brandon Jolley (Pasadena H.S.) added his second double-double of the season, contributing 10 points on 3 of 10 shooting, going 4 for 4 from the free throw line and grabbing 12 boards and sophomore guard Perris Hicks (Pasadena H.S.) led the team with 8 assists.

Freshman guard Ja Morgan (Las Vegas (NV) Palo Verde) was a perfect 6 for 6 from the charity stripe off of the bench, scoring 8 points and sophomore center Trey Edwards (Mansfield (TX) Legacy) grabbed his first double-double of the season off of the bench, adding 11 points on 5 of 8 shooting and 10 boards.

On the winner's side of the bracket SBVC faced off with the San Diego Miramar Jets (6-8) taking a 15 point lead at the half then punishing the Jets in the second half, eventually cruising into the Championship final with a 36 point victory, 84-48.

Hicks led all scorers with 26 points, going 6 for 10 from 3-point range and Rollins added 15 points on 5 of 10 shooting along with 2 blocks. Freshman guard Robert Lewis (Compton H.S.) scored 11 points on 5 of 11 shooting, grabbing 3 steals and Jolley had 10 points, going 6 for 8 from the free throw line.

Edwards added 15 huge boards, adding 9 points and Morgan made his way off of the bench to contribute 10 points on 5 of 7 shooting with seven assists in the win.

In the Championship final, SBVC took on the LA Harbor Seahawks (8-8) and both teams were locked into a fierce battle of wills, as SBVC grabbed slim lead just before the half, 33-30. The second half was not much easier for either team as SBVC tried to push some breathing room between themselves and the Seahawks, but LA Harbor kept pushing back. Eventually SBVC did take the game, 71-66.

Lewis would lead all scorers with 20 points, going 3 for 7 from beyond the arc and Hicks contributed 14 points, going 6 for 7 from the free throw line. Hawkins added 10 points, on 4 of 10 shooting, leading the team in rebounds (7), steals (2) and blocks in the victory.
