Sophomore quarterback Armando Herrera became San Bernardino Valley College's all-time leading passer, as he helped lead the Wolverines to a 63-35 victory over Mt. San Jacinto in an American Conference Mountain Division game Saturday night at SBVC Stadium.
Herrera entered the game needing one touchdown and 106 yards passing to take over the top spot in each statistical category at SBVC. But it was the running game that took over early for the Wolverines' offense.
Running back Jeffrey Proctor opened the scoring on the game's opening drive as he broke loose for a 33-yard touchdown run. Then, near the end of the first quarter, it was Proctor again to find the end zone from 3 yards out and a 14-0 lead after 15 minutes. The Wolverines needed only three plays into the second quarter to widen the lead. This time it was Austin Bacher finding a hole in the Eagles' defense and going 37 yards for a touchdown.
Then, 1:09 after Mt. San Jacinto scored, it was time for Herrera to solidify his place in the record books. He found DeJuan Moon in the end zone for a 27-yard score and a 28-7 lead. After Dominic Young's point after kick, Herrera's teammates mobbed him on the sideline after the record was announced to the crowd.
The Wolverines scored twice more in the final minutes of the half. Running back Joey Harman scored from 11 yards out with 2:18 to go, then Herrera had his second TD pass of the night, hitting Omar Perkins from 18 yards out to make it 42-7 with 37 seconds remaining in the half. The Eagles scored with five seconds to go, making it 42-14 at the half.
The Eagles rallied in the third quarter, scoring twice to make it 42-28. But it was all SBVC from there. Proctor scored his third touchdown of the game, this time from 30 yards out. Herrera used his feet to expand the lead, scoring on a 17-yard run. He closed out the SBVC scoring night with a 13-yard touchdown pass to CJ Harris.
Proctor ended the night with 100 yards rushing on eight carries and three scores. Bacher ran the ball 13 times for 150 yards and the one touchdown. Herrera ended the night completing 16 of 33 passes for 273 yards and three passing touchdowns, and one more on the road. Overall, the Wolverines racked up 634 yards of total offense in 22 minutes, 15 seconds of possession.
Penalties slowed both teams during the game. The Wolverines were charged with 17 penalties for 151 yards, while the Eagles had 119 yards marched off against them on 11 penalties.
