Wolverines Run Out of Gas Against Eagles

Mt. San Jacinto's Sheriron Jones threw a 14-yard pass to Kefa Cort with 29 seconds to go to put a heartbreaking end to the San Bernardino Valley College football team's season, as the Eagles beat the Wolverines 36-30 at Mt. San Jacinto.

The Wolverines started the fourth quarter up 30-21, but were unable to move the ball and hold possession. San Bernardino Valley only had the ball for a little more than five minutes in the fourth quarter as they clinged to the lead.

Things started slow for the Wolverines, as they turned the ball over on their three drives. It took the defense to get the Wolverines started, as Robbin Safotu grabbed a batted ball out of the air and returned it 80 yards to make the score 7-6 after Humberto Ramirez's point after was blocked.

After Alex Lewis's shaky start at quarterback, the Wolverines turned to Armando Herrera in the second quarter. He led the Wolverines on a 14-play, 80-yard drive that was punctuated by a 3-yard run by Jeffrey Proctor, and the Wolverines had a 14-7 lead after Herrera hit Brian Boyd Jr. on the two-point conversion.

It stayed that way through the half, but the Eagles quickly tied it, recovering a short opening kickoff, it took the Eagles five plays to get into the end zone. Jones kept the ball on an option play and ran up the middle to tie the game.

The wild third quarter continued, as Malik Anderson sacked Jones in the end zone for a safety, but the Eagles' defense got the points back, as Lewis had the ball ripped from him and returned 40 yards for a Mt. San Jacinto score, making the score 21-16.

Herrera came back in and led the Wolverines on scoring drives of 70 and 88 yards, as he passed to Boyd for a 22-yard score, then Darryl Turner rammed it in from a yard out to give San Bernardino Valley the 30-21 lead going into the fourth.

Penalties, a problem all season for the Wolverines, proved to be a downfall again Saturday. They were flagged 11 times for 100 yards. San Bernardino Valley also fumbled the ball away four times in the game.

The Wolverines will end their season at 5-5. But having their slim chance at a bowl game extinguished, coach Danile Algattas thinks the team is headed in the right direction for next year, especially if the team is able to stay together and train in the offseason.
