SBVC Football gets into defensive battle with Bulldogs, falling 16-6

SBVC (1-4) was locked in a defensive battle with a team they had not played since 2000, most of that battle they were winning, but a short field on one drive and a long drive bolstered by SBVC penalties gave the visiting Santa Maria Allan Hancock Bulldogs (2-3) a road win, 16-6.

Freshman quarterback Kendal Williams (Orlando (FL) Colonial) had a fairly decent game, tossing 29 times with 10 completions for 146 yards, but found himself on his backside almost as many times as completed passes. Williams was sacked nine times, but his grit and skills kept him in the game as the SBVC offensive line attempted to slow down the relentless blitzing onslaught of the Bulldogs defense.

The SBVC defense was no slouch on the field as nine different players had tackles for loss, including two a-piece for interior linemen, sophomore defensive lineman Marqueese Royster (Lake Oswego (OR) Lakeridge) and freshman defensive lineman Massen Newton (Lake Oswego (OR) Lakeridge) who combined totaled 13 tackles, 4 tackles for loss totaling a loss of 16 yards. Royster also added a sack for a loss of 8 yards, and Newton and freshman outside linebacker Ben Tualega (Riverside Poly) combined for the other sack on the night.

Late in the first half, with 5:04 left in the second quarter, SBVC started their drive. After a couple of failed run plays, SBVC took to the air and was promptly intercepted on their own 31 yard line. With a short field, Hancock went 6 plays in less than 3 minutes and darted in from 9 yards out to give the visiting Bulldogs the lead and after a two-point conversion, took an 8-0 lead going into halftime.

Early in the third quarter, SBVC punted, but the Bulldogs fumbled the punt and an alert sophomore wide receiver Ryan Germany (Oxon Hill (MD) Potomac) scooped up the mistake giving SBVC possession around midfield. The euphoria would last only two plays, as Williams taking off on a quarterback run, fumbled the ball and gave it right back to the Bulldogs. Almost 4 minutes and 10 plays later, the Bulldogs were in the end zone again and after another two-point conversion, took an almost insurmountable 16-0 lead.

After a couple more turnovers, one each for both teams, SBVC got in a very dangerous rhythm. The dump pass and run style, kept the Bulldogs defense guessing, but a gut-wrenching 19 yard SBVC touchdown pass was called back on off-setting penalties midway through the drive. During the drive, SBVC was put into a 4th down and 9 yards to go and Williams darted to the sticks for 10 yards, giving SBVC a first and goal at the Allan Hancock 8 yard line. Later in the drive, SBVC was put into a 4th and Goal situation, but the Bulldogs bailed out the home side on a pass interference call in the end zone, giving SBVC a fresh set of downs and three yards to go. Moments later, Williams bowled in for SBVC's first score of the night with 5:31 left in the game. Unfortunately, the SBVC two-point conversion attempt failed.
