SBVC Football crushes the Jaguars, keeps streak alive, 51-17

SBVC (8-1; 5-1) has rolled over some impressive teams, but the journey is far from over, because only teams who win Bowl games get rings, the home side helped improve their chances by knocking off the Chula Vista Southwestern Jaguars (3-6; 2-4), 51-17.

SBVC continued their home winning streak, now stretching to 13 games going back to 2013. In addition, the last time SBVC defeated Southwestern was 2009, that game, which was on Halloween night, took place in Chula Vista. SBVC has scored 168 points in the past three games and only allowed 34.

The SBVC offensive line owned the line of scrimmage as they helped guide freshman running back Deion Walker (Matthews (NC) Butler) to his fifth consecutive 100+ yard game, carrying the ball 16 times for 273 yards and 3 scores. Walker finished the game 4th All-time in the SBVC individual single game yardage records with 273 yards, the record is 327 yards by Kristin James vs. Citrus in 2010.

The Jaguars would respond 11 minutes later with a 33-yard field goal to make the score 7-3. Just before the end of the first quarter, sophomore quarterback Daniel Epperson (Phelan Serrano) scampered into the end zone from 7-yards out to conclude the 7 play-95 yard drive, giving SBVC a 13-3 lead. Epperson had another fantastic night, going 12 for 19 with 194 yards and two touchdowns.

After a quick 3-and-out by Southwestern, SBVC turns around with Epperson connecting on a 55-yard pass completion to freshman wide receiver Brandy Holmes (Columbia (SC) Irmo) and then a 5-yard strike to sophomore wide receiver Mason Rutherford (Ashland (KY) Fairview). After an extra point by freshman kicker Alex Raya (Beaumont H.S.), SBVC would take a 20-3 lead.

Several drives later, SBVC would use another huge completion to extend a drive as Epperson connected with Rutherford for a 48-yard bomb and then a steady dose of Walker, got the home side back into the end zone as the running back toted the rick for a 7-yard score. Giving SBVC a 27-3 lead going into halftime.

On their first drive in the second half, SBVC went 86 yards on three plays as Walker ran for a 59-yard pick-up, then Epperson took off for a 14-yard gain and finally Epperson found Rutherford again for a score, this time for 13-yard and a 34-3 lead.

Southwestern would take their next drive and go 71 yard in 14 plays and take a 4th and 3, turning it into an 11 yard score to get to within 24-points, 34-10. SBVC would get the ball back and after a fumble recovery by sophomore defensive back Jeffrey Harman (Redlands East Valley), SBVC would add to the scoreboard again as Raya converted a 27-yard field goal in three points. Harman would finish the night with three total tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and two broken up passes.

The Jaguars would respond with a score of their own on the very next drive, going 73 yards in 14 plays, but the SBVC offensive line had other plans, and Walker took the first play from scrimmage and hauled 75-yards to another gigantic touchdown, making the score 44-17.

On the next drive, a moment of futility for the ages, as the Jaguars had a busted punt which saw the punter running for his life, backwards. And as he tried to get rid of the ball, the punter was tackled by freshman linebacker Tawon Green (Rialto Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower) and fumbled the ball right to sophomore linebacker Temerick Harper (Rialto W.A. Carter) who promptly coasted 32-yards for a score. The touchdown capped off a tremendous night for Harper who led the team with 12 total tackles, including four solo.
