SBVC Football rumbles over Eagles, goes 4-0 for first time since ‘96

SBVC (4-0; 1-0) opened up American Division-Mountain Conference play by running out to a 28-0 lead and never looking back as the home side took their record to 4-0 for the first time in 19 years, pummeling the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles (1-3; 0-1), 41-21.

Freshman running back Deion Walker (Matthews (NC) Butler) led the way for the SBVC ground game as he carried the ball 17 times for 93 yards and a touchdown, averaging 5.5 yards per carry and caught on pass for 9 yards in the win. Filling the All-Purpose role was sophomore wide receiver Mason Rutherford (Ashland (KY) Fairview) who caught three passes for 40 yards and a score and ran the ball twice for 62 yards and a score. Walker and Rutherford tied with 102 all-purpose yards each.

Freshman kicker Alex Raya (Beaumont H.S.) was a one man wrecking crew, not only did he nail 4th quarter field goals of 43 and 47 yards and hit all five of his extra point attempts, but he also averaged 50 yards per kick off, four of his eight kickoffs went for touchbacks.

The SBVC line backing core was so destructive that they held Mt. San Jacinto to only 28 yards rushing on 25 attempts. Sophomore linebacker Chibuike Nwuda (La Verne Damien) had five total tackles, assisted on two, had two tackles for loss totaling a loss of 14 yards, a sack that was a loss of nine yards in the 2nd quarter and a 36 yard Pick-Six in the 4th quarter. Sophomore linebacker Colbert Calhoun (Riverside John Wesley North) also had five tackles, assisting on three, including a sack for a loss of 11 yards in the 3rd quarter which killed a drive for the Eagles and a broken up pass. Sophomore linebacker Temerick Harper (Rialto W.A. Carter) led all tacklers for SBVC with nine total, assisting on five, including a tackle and a half for a loss of one yard.

Sophomore defensive back Jeffrey Harman (Redlands East Valley) had a first quarter interception which led to the SBVC opening score, as Walker dived into the end zone from 4 yards out with 5:27 left in the quarter. After a Raya extra point, SBVC had a 7-0 lead going into the second quarter.

On the first play of the second quarter, sophomore quarterback Daniel Epperson (Phelan Serrano) tossed a dart, lining up with Rutherford for a 31 yard score, with 14:53 left in the first half. Late in the second quarter, SBVC found the end zone again when freshman running back Devonte Dixon (Paramount H.S.) scampered in from two yards out to give SBVC a 21-0 lead going into halftime.
