Four Wolverines to Play Ball at Four-Year Schools

The 2020 San Bernardino Valley College baseball season came to a premature end due to Covid-19 related stay at home orders, just as the Wolverines had opened Inland Empire Athletic Conference play with a 6-1 record.

But even though their seasons were cut short, four members of the SBVC squad were able to secure their futures at four-year schools.

Leading the way was outfielder Derek Bogh, who was at or near the top of every offensive statistic for the Wolverines in 2020. Bogh was the team leader in at bats (81), hits (30), walks (22), home runs (2), on-base percentage (.519) and was second on the team in batting average (.370) and slugging (.506) - teammate Justin Robles led in both of those categories in fewer at bats.

Bogh, a product of Redlands Citrus Valley High School, won't be going far, however. He will be continuing his career just up Interstate 215 at Cal State San Bernardino.

He won't be alone suiting up for the Coyotes next season, as pitcher Nathaniel Mendoza has committed to play at Cal State San Bernardino as well. Mendoza, a graduate of Oak Hills High School, finished his career at SBVC with a 6-2 record with two complete games. He was 4-1 in 2020 for the Wolverines (both complete games came in 2020), striking out 44 in 39 2/3 innings pitched while posting a 2.95 earned run average.

Catcher Jesse McGonigal's career at SBVC has helped him land at Lyon College in Batesville, Ark. The NAIA team was 20-6 when the 2020 season came to an end. McGonigal, a graduate of Fontana Summit High School, played in 41 games over his two seasons at SBVC, hitting four home runs. Behind the plate, he threw out 11 runners trying to steal.

Freshman Nick Schoonover will be taking his 6-foot-6 frame to continue his career at Fresno Pacific University. The right-handed pitcher is a graduate of San Bernardino Indian Springs High School. He appeared in eight games in 2020 - all in relief - striking out nine in 10 1/3 innings pitched. The NCAA Division 2 Sunbirds were 13-9 before the season concluded.
