Sophomore Andrew Aguilera pitched a complete game in his final game at San Bernardino Valley College, and his sophomore teammates put on an offensive show as the Wolverines knocked off Mt. San Jacinto 13-3 in the season finale for both teams.
The Eagles opened the scoring with a single run in the first, but the Wolverines came right back in the bottom half against starter Victor Picazo. Jacob Johnson led off with a walk, and Adrian Garcia was hit by a pitch. Tyler Van Marter's fly out allowed Johnson to advance to third, and Garcia stole second. Jason Lopez flew out to left, scoring Johnson and Creighton Ubides singled home Garcia. Picazo got out of the inning, enducing a fielder's choice out of Nathanial Sisk, but that was it for him, as he left the game with a blister on his throwing hand.
SBVC scored three times in the second against reliever Landon Myers. Tristen Macias and Jaden Burns led off with back-to-back singles, and one out later, Johnson singled hom Macias. Garcia followed with a bunt single that loaded the bases. Van Marter hit a high looping ball behind third base that popped out of shortstop Trae Erikson's glove to score Burns. Lopez followed with his second sacrifice fly of the game -- this one caught at the fence in left field -- to score Garcia.
Meanwhile, Aguilera was keeping things under control. He threw 133 pitches to 37 batters, scattering 11 hits, but only walking one. He also got help from his defense, as two runners were thrown out at the plate in the game. Aguilera struck out five on the day.
At the plate, Ubides was 2-for-3 with four RBI, while Garcia was 1-for-2 with three runs scored and two walks in the game. Van Marter was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Johnson scored twice as well.
The Wolverines closed out the 2018 campaign with a record of 17-23, 10-14 in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference. Johnson led the team with a .405 batting average, with Van Marter right behind at .371 (with 56 more at bats). Van Marter finished the season leading the team with four home runs and 39 RBI.
