Wolverines Complete Series Sweep of Knights

The San Bernardino Valley College baseball team scored five times in the first three innings, then broke open a one-run game with five runs in the sixth inning to complete a sweep of San Diego City College with a 10-6 win Monday at SBVC.

Avery Rivera pitched 4 2/3 innings of relief for the win for the Wolverines, who moved back to .500 in Pacific Coast Athletic Conference play. Starter Carlos Sernas appeared to be crusing along against the Knights, striking out four and allowing one run and two hits through four innings. But in the fifth, some defensive mistakes and control issues led to his removal, as he walked four batters in the inning before being replaced by Rivera.

But the Wolverines' offense picked up the slack. Up 5-4 in the sixth, they pounded out five runs. Adrian Garcia led off with a single, and Jaden Burns reached on an error as he tried to move Garcia over. Tyler Van Marter hit a chop infield single, and everyone moved up 90 feet when a throw from shortstop Carlos Cosio ended up down the right field line. Jason Lopez followed by singling home Burns, then going to second on the throw home. Tristian Macias singled home Van Marter, and then Lopez scored on a passed ball. Macias ended up on third with two out, and finished off the scoring when he came home on a wild pitch, giving the Wolverines a 10-4 cusion.

Van Marter was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two walks to lead the Wolverines. Nathanial Sisk had a booming triple off the screen in left field as he went 1-for-4 with a run and RBI, while Garcia was 2-for-2 with two walks and a run.

The Wolverines open a series against Grossmont on Tuesday at Grossmont.
