Aguilera Nearly Perfect as Wolverines Blank Knights

Andrew Aguilera wasn't perfect on the mound for San Bernardino Valley College on Thursday.

But he was pretty close.

The left-handed pitcher from Aquinas threw a no hitter, only allowing three base runners as the Wolverines trounced the San Diego City College Knights 14-0 in San Diego.

Aguilera struck out five Knights, walking two and hitting another with a pitch. And in inducing a double play, he only faced 29 batters, two over the minimum. He got 18 of his outs on fly outs, with center fielder Jared Burns getting the most of those with seven.

It is the first documented no hitter for San Bernardino Valley College since 1935, and the first against a collegiate opponent. There have only been two other docuented no hitters in SBVC history, both of which happening in the 1930s. Oberlin Levingston lost to Redlands High 1-0 in seven innings while allowing no hits in 1930. Then, in 1935, Tommy Templeton threw a perfect game, beating Colton High 2-0.

Meanwhile, the Wolverines' offense gave Aguilera plenty to work with. They pounded out 16 hits, scoring two unearned runs in the first inning that turned out to be all they needed. Tyler Van Marter singled to left, moving Creighton Ubides up, but after the ball skipped away, Ubides scored and Van Marter ended up on third. Tristian Macias followed an out later by singling home Van Marter.

Ubides and Van Marter did much of the damage from the top of the order. Ubides was 2-for-6 with five RBI on the game, while Van Marter was 4-for-4 with three doubles, one RBI and two runs scored. Adrian Garcia and Nathaniel Sisk each scored three times as well.

The two teams complete their series at noon Saturday at SBVC.
