Wolverines Take Two the Long Way

The San Bernardino Valley College baseball team picked up a pair of wins Saturday afternoon, taking two out of three games from Napa Valley College in a three-game series, defeating the Storm 10-9 in the conclusion of Thursday's game, then 11-10 in Saturday's regularly scheduled game.

The day opened with the Wolverines and Storm completing Thursday's game that was suspended by darkness tied a 9 after 10 innings. It took three more innings of action before someone was able to break through for the win.

Jaden Burns led off the inning reaching on an error, then stealing second. Creighton Ubides followed with a single up the middle, with Burns advancing to third. After Matt Glover was intentionally walked, Joseph Rodriguez delivered a long fly ball to right field for a sacrifice fly and the win.

After a 15-minute break, the two teams started Saturday's regularly scheduled game. Pedro Gomez, who got the win closing out the first game, started the second game, going two innings, and he left with the lead as Jason Lopez singled home Tristen Macias with the game's first run in the first inning.

The Wolverines' bats kept going from there, as Lopez doubled home Tyler Van Marter, and Rodriguez doubled home Nathan Sisk later in the inning to give the Wolverine an early 4-0 lead.

San Bernardino Valley did its biggest damage in the seventh, opening an 11-2 lead thanks to a two-run single from Sisk and another two-run single from Van Marter.

But the Storm nearly made it all the way back in the eighth, as they scored seven times, thanks in part to three SBVC errors in the inning.

Brandon Jordon came in however to get the final four outs to earn the save, as the Wolverines held on.

Lopez had a big game at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored, while Sisk was 2-for-3 with four RBI and two runs scored.

The Wolverines open conference play this coming week with three games against San Diego Mesa. Games 1 and 3 will be in San Diego on Tuesday and Saturday, with Game 2 taking place at SBVC on Thursday at 2 p.m.
