Wolverines Come Up Short in Extra Innings

A day after having their game ended tied at 9 after 10 innings, the San Bernardino Valley College and Napa Valley College baseball teams needed extra innings to decide their game.

Friday, the Storm got a run in the top of the 10th, then held off the Wolverines for a 4-3 victory in game two of their three-game series. The two teams will complete Thursday's game starting at 11 a.m., with the final game starting 15 minutes after the completion of Thursday's game.

The Wolverines took the lead in the eighth inning. With one out, Tristen Macias doubled, then went to third when Jason Lopez reached on an error. After Jaden Burns flew out to center, the Wolverines used trickery to get the run home. Lopez broke from first early, drawing a pick off throw. He got tangled in a run down, and was safely able to return to first as Macias scored from third.

But in the top half of the ninth, the Storm tied it. Brooks Green led off with a walk, then, with one out, went to second on a slow groundout to second base. Carter Pennington, the third designated hitter used in the game, singled to tie the game.

In the tenth, Sam Dinerman led off with a single against reliever Tyler Van Marter. He went to third when Justin Banks singled. Clayton Espino singled home Dinerman, and Van Marter proceeded to strike out the side from there.

The Wolverines were able to get runners on in the tenth, but Van Marter and Macias were stranded at second and third.
