Ninth Inning Let Down Sinks Wolverines

The San Bernardino Valley College baseball team was one out away from its first home victory of the season.

Now, they'll have to wait for another game at home.

Irvine Valley College scored three times after two were out in the top of the ninth inning to beat the Wolverines 5-4 as part of College of the Desert's David Buttles Memorial Tournament.

The Wolverines (1-2) had taken the lead in the sixth inning thanks to some help from the Lasers (2-2). Adrian Garcia led off the inning reaching on an error, then, one out later, went to second on a wild pitch. Josh Torrance walked, and Tyler Van Marter blooped a single down the right field line to load the bases. Another wild pitch allowed Garcia to come home, with the other runners moving up, opening a spot for Brian Campos, who also walked. Jason Lopez walked to force in another run, ending the day for Irvine Valley starter Jason Farese. Noah Bradford came in and got an infield fly pop up and fielder's choice to end the rally.yle

In the ninth, SBVC reliever Robert Luna got the first two outs, but back-to-back doubles from Ryan Santa Cruz and Ben McConnell chased Luna.

Van Marter moved to the mound from first base, and after falling behind to David Rojas 2-0, gave up a single to right that tied the game, with Rojas moving to second on the play at the plate. Dustin Angus followed with a single, with Rojas just beating Nathan Sisk's tag at the plate.

The tournament continues Friday, with the Wolverines taking on Fullerton College at 10 a.m. at College of the Desert.
