SBVC Baseball sinks the Vikings, 19-5

SBVC (8-8-1; 3-2) put up their largest offensive barrage since the end of last season as they cranked out 20 hits and scored 19 runs, defeating the Barstow Vikings (5-10; 3-2) in a Foothill Conference game, 19-5.

SBVC freshman right handed starting pitcher Chris Rocco (2-2) (Fontana Jurupa Hills) tossed six complete innings, allowing 3 runs, all earned, on 6 hits, walking one and striking out seven, in collecting his second win of the season. Four different pitchers would combine to shut down the Vikings over the next three innings, giving up 2 runs, both earned, on 5 hits and walking one.

Barstow would open up the scoring in the top of the second, with a run across, but SBVC would answer back, bringing 9 men to the plate and scoring five runs of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Freshman left fielder Aaron Gamez (Riverside La Sierra) would hit a bases loaded, two out double to center, scoring two. Which led to a three-run homer by freshman center fielder Billy Reyes (Yucaipa H.S.) and like that SBVC had the lead for good, 5-1.

Barstow would put up two more runs in the top of the third, making the score 5-3. In the third inning, SBVC brought 10 men to the plate, scoring five more runs in the inning. After a one out double by sophomore third baseman David Osuna (Fontana Henry J. Kaiser), put runners at third and second, the Vikings pulled their starting pitcher. Unfortunately, for Barstow the new pitcher hit the next two SBVC batters, loading the bases, and then scoring a run. The next batter, Gamez, collected a bases loaded walk to score another run and then a fielder's choice by Reyes, added another run. SBVC would end the scoring in the third with a single to center by sophomore short stop Gerardo Torreblanca (Fontana H.S.), to make the score, 10-3.

SBVC put up six more runs in the fourth inning as freshman second baseman Anthony Lee (Menifee Paloma Valley) hit a bases loaded, one out double to left scoring two more runs, which was immediately followed up by a double from Gamez, scoring two more runs, "Double Double!" Another run would score on an error by the Vikings right fielder and another SBVC run would score on a fielder's choice, making the score 16-3.

SBVC would score two more runs in the fifth as Lee doubled to left and then sophomore left fielder Jesus Gonzalez (Rialto W.A. Carter) also doubled to left, and that was followed with another double to left, this time by Reyes, "Double Double Double!" Making the score 18-3.

Barstow would add a run in the top half of the seventh and SBVC would equalize in the bottom of the seventh when Lee singled to right and then Gonzalez doubled to left to score Lee. The Vikings would add a run in the top of the ninth.

Gamez, as a leadoff batter, went 2 for 3 with five runs batted in and a run scored and Gonzalez, who took over for Gamez in left in the fourth, after Gamez ran full speed into the outfield fence, went 2 for 2 with two RBI's and 2 runs scored.

eyes went 4 for 5 with five RBI's and two runs scored and Torreblanca went 3 for 4 with a run scored and an RBI. Sophomore designated hitter Jordan Babbitt (Highland Citrus Valley) went 3 for 5 with 3 runs scored and an RBI and Osuna went 2 for 4 with two runs scored.

Freshman catcher Ryan Maestas (Rialto W.A. Carter) went 0 for 2, was hit by a pitch, was walked and scored three runs and Lee, in the nine hole, went 3 for 3 with five runs scored and three RBI's.
