SBVC Baseball sneaks past Compton with 3 run 8th inning, 5-3

SBVC (3-0) received a solid pitching performance and had several breaks fall their way as they used a 3 run 8th inning to sneak by the Compton Tartars (0-3), 5-3.

With the victory, SBVC head coach Bill Mierzwik inches closer to the 600 win plateau, notching his 596th career victory.

SBVC opened up the scoring in the bottom of the first when sophomore short stop Gerardo Torreblanca (Fontana H.S.) hit a one out single to left, scoring the leadoff batter, freshman left fielder Aaron Gamez (Riverside La Sierra) from third base.

Compton would tie the game at 1-1 in the top half of the fourth and SBVC would regain the lead by adding another run in the bottom of the fifth, when sophomore right fielder Connor McCoy (Highland Citrus Valley) clobbered a one out triple to right and was brought home on an infield single by freshman center fielder Billy Reyes (Yucaipa H.S.), making the score 2-1.

Later, the Tartars would take another lead, as they scored two in the top of the sixth, but SBVC would break the game wide open in the bottom of the eighth as they put three across the plate. Torreblanca, freshman pinch runner Anthony Fernandez (Moreno Valley Valley View) and sophomore second baseman Anthony Aguila (Redlands H.S.) all scored in the inning.

SBVC sophomore right handed starting pitcher Brett Prater (Riverside Woodcrest Christian) tossed six innings, surrendering three runs, one earned, on seven hits, walking on and striking out five in his first win of the season. Freshman right handed relief pitcher Jessy Fuerte (Bloomington H.S.) threw three innings of relief giving up one hit and striking out two for his first save of the season.
