SBVC Baseball used 8 run 3rd inning to cruise past the Eagles, 13-3

SBVC (1-0) opened up the 2016 season with a bang as hammered out 15 hits and racked up 8 runs in the 3rd inning rolling over the Sylmar Los Angeles Mission Eagles (0-1), 13-3.

SBVC scored in the bottom of the 2nd on a two out single by leadoff batter freshman left fielder Aaron Gamez (Riverside La Sierra), scoring sophomore designated hitter Breion Barron (Hemet Tahquitz) from third to give the home side the early lead. That lead would be short lived as the Eagles added a couple of runs in the top half of the 3rd to make the score 2-1.

Then SBVC would open the flood gates in the bottom of the 3rd as sophomore short stop Gerardo Torreblanca (Fontana H.S.) led off the inning with a triple to center and was marooned there until the bases were loaded with one out. Barron singled to right, bringing in two, giving SBVC the lead, 3-2. With a runner on third base, freshman catcher Mike Quinonez (San Bernardino Cajon) reached on an error by the Eagles 1st baseman and sophomore third baseman David Osuna (Fontana Henry J. Kaiser) darted in from third to add another run.

And the inning was far from over, in all, SBVC had 12 players at the plate, with Torreblanca hitting a double to center scoring two more later in the same inning. In the end, SBVC would score 8 runs on 6 hits, stranding one and the Eagles only committing one error.

SBVC left handed starting pitcher Tyler Penix (Highland Citrus Valley) was phenomenal, tossing six complete innings, giving up two runs, both unearned, on five hits, walking two and striking out two, to grab his first win of the season. Freshman right handed relief pitcher Erick Ascencion (Fontana Henry J. Kaiser) three an inning and an third, surrendering an earned run, walking four and striking out one and sophomore right handed relief pitcher Grant Gooselaw (Lake Elsinore Temescal Canyon) wrapped up the game, tossing an inning and two thirds, walking one.

Gamez went 3 for 6 with a run scored and two runs batted in and Torreblanca had a dynamite day at the plate going 4 for 4 with three of those hits being for extra bases, two doubles and a triple, two runs scored and two RBI's.

Barron went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBI's and sophomore right fielder Connor McCoy (Highland Citrus Valley) went 2 for 4 with a double, a run scored and an RBI on the afternoon.
