Jacobs, Ramirez Chosen SBVC Athletes of Year

The San Bernardino Valley College Foundation recently announced the winners of the 2018-19 scholarship awards, including naming the Male and Female Athletes of the Year.

Distance runner Michael Ramirez was named the Male Athlete of the Year, while women’s soccer player Karen Jacobs earned the Female Athlete of the Year honor.

Jacobs, a sophomore from Redlands High School, was the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference’s player of the year in 2018, as she and the Wolverines made a run to the state semifinals. She led the team on offense with team highs in goals (18) and assists (13), with six of her goals being game-winning goals. Jacobs has committed to continue her soccer career at Louisiana State University-Alexandria in the fall.

Ramirez is a graduate of Grand Terrace High School. In the fall, Ramirez was the fastest Wolverine at the State Championships, as he earned All-American honors by finishing 10th with a time of 20 minutes, 43 seconds on the four-mile course. In the spring, Ramirez focused on the 10,000 meters on the track. He qualified for the State Championships for the second year in a row, posting a time of 32:47.66 at the Southern California Regionals at Riverside City College. The State Championships begin May 17. He has committed to Chico State in the fall, and is the SBVC’s nomination to the PCAC Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Sophomore softball player Gabrielle Ursuy received the Susan Petta Memorial Scholarship, given to an athlete with at least a 2.5 grade point average, who will continue to a senior college. Ursuy completed her SBVC career in the all-time Top 10 of hits and runs batted in for the squad. She will transfer to Cal State San Bernardino to pursue Child Development with an emphasis on Special Education.
